Art & Design

A choice of either Fine Art or Graphic Communication.

Fine Art

Over the two years’ you will develop your visual language and creative ability. This will be through painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture work. The work is broken down to cover a range of objectives

  • Research - Developing ideas through research and analyse other artists’ work, cultures and genres.
  • Exploration and Manipulation of materials - Investigating a variety of material, techniques and processes.
  • Recording Ideas - Create preparatory studies. Annotate observations and relevant insights; aesthetic understanding and critical skills.
  • Realised Outcome- Produce a meaningful and personal response to your project.

You are expected to produce a personal portfolio covering a range of activities and in-depth assignments. You will have the opportunity to experiment with different media in order to explore your strengths and weaknesses. You will be monitored regularly on a one-to-one basis during lesson times. Verbal and written feedback will be documented in relation to the assessment criteria. Each project will be marked and feedback sheets will be given to aid development. You will also complete a mock exam during term 1 of Year 11.

There are 2 projects for component 1.

1. During the first project you will investigate mark making, drawing, painting, printmaking, colour theory and artist research.

2. During the second project you will investigate computer aided design, drawing, printmaking, 3D relief and artist research.

Graphic Communication

Graphic communication enables you to explore and work in a range of media in order to convey information, ideas and meaning in response to a design brief. Throughout this course you will have the opportunity to be creative and develop your own ideas and skills. You will have the opportunity to work with a variety of methods and materials such as pencil, digital media,  pen, ink, collage, photography and printmaking.

During years 10 and 11 you will have the opportunity to work in various areas of graphic communication such as:

  • Interactive media (including web, app and game design)
  • Advertising
  • Packaging design
  • Design for print
  • Illustration
  • Communication graphics
  • Branding
  • Design for film and television.

You will be expected to demonstrate the skill and ability to use graphic communication techniques such as typography, illustration, digital and/or non-digital photography, hand and digital rendered working methods.

Homework (both options) 

You will evaluate your own and others’ work. Checklists will be allocated to monitor progress. Homework will be set on a weekly basis.
